Its like I'm destined to translate songs that start with "L"!

Here's my second attempt at translating a song and even though my eyes won't open properly, I'm determined to post it up!
And I'm trying a different method of presenting the lyrics so you don't have to scroll back and forth. Tell me if you guys prefer this or the other ^-^

Lotus

誰も知らない 知られてはいけない その瞳の奥 涙を隠してる
夢のように 時間を止めて 悲しみをそっと 眠らせたまま
Daremo shiranai shirarete wa ikenai   Sono hitomi no oku namida wo kakushiteru
Yume no you ni jikan wo tomete   Kanashimi wo sotto nemuraseta mama
Nobody knows, nobody must know, the tears hidden behind those eyes
Like a dream, time stops, letting sorrow sleep
[1]

今でも蘇る記憶は 傷だらけガラスのようで
刻み込まれてる 明日を信じてる
Ima de mo yomigaeru kioku wa   Kizu darake garasu no you de
Kizami komareteru   Ashita wo shinjiteru
Even now, the memories I recall are like scratched glass
Covered in scars
[2], I believe in tomorrow

願いを 今この手に 真実を求めて
誰も知らない 物語始まる
君がいるから 迷うことはない
涙は流さない その日まで
Negai wo ima kono teni   Shinjitsu wo motomete
Daremo shiranai   Sutoorii hajimaru
Kimi ga iru kara   Mayou koto wa nai
Namida wa nagasanai   Sono hi made
With hope [3] in this hand, I seek the truth
The story that nobody knows, begins
Because you're here, I have no uncertainties
I won't shed tears, until that day

まだ見ぬ未来を 恐れることはない 目の前にある 世界を信じるだけ
手にしたもの 無くしたもの 全てにきっと 意味があるから
Mada minu mirai wo osoreru koto wa nai   Me no mae ni aru sekai wo shinjiru dake
Te ni shita mono nakushita mono   Subete ni kitto imi ga aru kara
Of the unseen future, I have no need to fear   I'll just believe in the world in front of me
The things I hold in my hand
[4], the things I've lost   Surely, there is a reason behind it

僕らは悲しみに暮れても 喜びに導かれてる
今を生きている 君と歩いてる
Bokura wa kanashimi ni kurete mo   Yorokobi ni michibikareteru
Ima wo ikiteiru   Kimi to aruiteru
Even if we are covered [5] by sorrow, we will be led to happiness,
I'm living in the present as I walk with you

忘れないで いつでも 僕はここにいる
誰も知らない 物語は続く
全てを懸けて 守るものがある
確かなその想いを 貫いて
Wasurenaide itsudemo   Boku wa koko ni iru
Daremo shiranai   Sutoorii wa tsuzuku
Subete wo kakete   Mamoru mono ga aru
Tashika na sono omoi wo tsuranuite
Please never forget that I'm here,
The story that nobody knows, continues
Risking everything, I have things I'm protecting
As I experience those certain
[6] feelings

過去も未来も かき混ぜるように
太陽が昇り始めた空へ..
Kako mo mirai mo kaki mazeru you ni
Taiyou ga nobori hajimeta sora  e..
Like the past and the future blending,
The sun starts rising into the sky..

物語始まる
Sutoorii hajimaru
The story begins

君がいるから 迷うことはない
長い夜を越えよう

Kimi ga iru kara   Mayou koto wa nai
Nagai yoru wo koe you
Because you're here, I have no uncertainties
Let's overcome the long night

願いを 今この手に 真実を求めて
誰も知らない 物語始まる
君がいるから 迷うことはない
涙は流さない その日まで

Negai wo ima kono teni   Shinjitsu wo motomete
Daremo shiranai   Sutoorii hajimaru
Kimi ga iru kara   Mayou koto wa nai
Namida wa nagasanai   Sono hi made
With hope [7] in this hand, I seek the truth
The story that nobody knows, begins
Because you're here, I have no uncertainties
I won't shed tears, until that day

T/N Notes:
[1] letting sorrow sleep
Its closer to "kill" but without the implied violence
[2] Covered in scars
Closer to "scratches" but it didn't sound right.. Plus, if you got scratched, it would leave scars, no? ^-^
[3] With hope in this hand
The word is closer to "desire" but more like wishing than wanting so I chose "hope" to keep the balance
[4] The things I hold in my hand
This is what it literally translates to but it can be better understood as "The things I have" to match with the next part, "The things I've lost"
[5] Even if we are covered by sorrow
Think of this as physically covered, like engulfed but of lesser intensity
[6] As I experience those certain feelings
Think of it as the feeling you have when you know something is right. I couldn't find a better way or translating it
[7] See [4].

Personal thoughts:

I'm not gonna pick out fav sentences cause the whole song is a masterpiece ♥
The hope, balanced with the admittance of of reality and the sorrow it brings is just beautiful~
Coupled with the beautiful play on pitch and chorus, it makes it into my top 10 ^-^
The PV is.. well.. I'll just save that for later for those who haven't watched it =P

As I'm sure I've said COUNTLESS times before, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song and I will karaoke the PV but probably later this week if you guys can wait for it ^-^ I'll be posting it on [livejournal.com profile] kiseki_arashi  so look out for it! =D

Um, I know I haven't set rock hard rules but the default applies, no sharing outside the journal, credit if quoting, ask before using etc. ^-^

PS: *ahem*randomsidenote*ahem* I keep using Navy and Grey cause they arn't so harsh on my background but they get a bit boring.. What colors would be nice do you think?

Yayyy. Thanks for this *-*
I absolutely loveeeee this song too and now it's all the better since I can understand it all x)

*Random Question*
Why does the kanji use monogatari when they pronounce it as the kana vrsn of the English word? *-* /just curious if you know!~ heh

You're welcome~ ^-^
Did you pre-order the single?? I haven't been this excited since Believe loll. Yappari, kakkoi Arashi in a full dance routine makes my heart dance! ♥

Well, I don't know for sure but what I think is that the word "物語" is not only "story" as we understand it in english but it's more personal, something like, a biography but less formal. It gives a more personal impression in relation to the whole song and also from the theme of hope and so on, it also hints at the start of a journey for the individual(s). It could be the lyricist's personal choice to use it instead just writing the kana.
Why they replaced it with "Sutoorii" could simply be due to the number of syllables, 4 versus 5. And its also cool to add english words in lyrics *wink*

Haha I hoped I helped with that essay but let me know what you think too =)

Unfortunately funds are low and I wasn't able to pre-order T~T but I heard it on youtube so I guess that's stilll goood heh.

Hmm, yeah I get what you mean about the deeper meaning about 物語 because I've seen it used in such contexts and etc. But haha, thanks for that ~! I guess they were trying to include the 物語 meaning yet be cool with the Eng words at the same time xD haha~

But yeh! Thanks for the translations again <3 I did Japanese studies for years but I still find it hard to translate songs ;_;

Aww~ The PV is out too and I can't count the number of times I've watched/listened to it XD

Hahha true, I don't know why they think English is so great when they have words that can express so much so simply ♥

Japanese studies? As in learning Japanese or learning about Japanese? Sounds fun either way XD I can't really translate songs that easily too.. I need ALOT of help from dictionaries but theres also the tricky guesswork of some meanings from the context of the song @_@ But in the end, I love the challenge XD DoM kamo shirenai ne haha XD

(Just realised that I've been using the same icon cos I keep forgetting to set it xD)

But yeah~ I find that Japanese words have a MUCH deeper meaning than actual English words. Not sure why ~.~" Maybe the English language got lazy and decided to keep it all simple xD

Oh haha. I learnt the language Japanese (with bits about the culture etc included) Ahhh ~_~" I'm so sick of using the dictionary xD haha. But yeah, I gave up Japanese studies last year so the lack of studying means I am now horrible at it ;___; ! Heh DoM <3 That means we should match since I'm a DoS :3 :3 xD

YAY!
thanks for translating and sharing this!
i really, really appreciate how you changed from ur usual layout to this, because usually when im looking at the lyrics, i tend to open a word doc to rearrange the lyrics into how it is right now so that it's easier for me to learn the words.. so... you're awesome <3
just imagine my delight when i realised you're arranging it this way too! haha! ^^

I'm glad you like the new layout! I think I'll stick to this from now on =D
Sou ne, I used to create tables in MS word and line the romaji and translations together XD

I like how you translated the song, the English words seem to flow nicely to me. ^^ Even now, the memories I recall are like scratched glass
Covered in scars [2], I believe in tomorrow >>>I ESPECIALLY love this part about relating memories to scratched glass, the imagery in my mind is really beautiful somehow, heh.

(If I may ask, how long did it take you to reach this degree of fluency, being able to translate smoothly? I just started learning Japanese that's why, heh.)

Aww~ Thank you! ♥ ^-^
Sou ne, I really like the lyrics to this song, my fav.. I think is.. "Risking everything, I have things I'm protecting" I love the idea that they are willing to protect their cherished things no matter what and the fact that I know they cherish their fans makes it even more beautiful ♥

Sou desu ne.. I started watching Japanese vids when I first watched Hanadan, which was about March of 2009, so, about 2 years?
Ah, my Japanese isn't all that good actually.. #'_'#
I can't read Kanji but if I use my dictionary, I can work out the meaning. This is because I've never had any formal training, only a summer intensive course about a year ago.. But I tried to learn Japanese by myself and through MANY hours of watching Arashi, I picked up on the basic sentence structures and syntax of the language. Combined with a dictionary I can sort of translate >.< I'm hopefully studying it this year in Uni at level 2 so I guess something must have worked XD

But, if looking to translate lyrics is your goal, what I did was create tables in MS Word and put the romaji alongside with the translations. Because lyrics leave out more stuff that normal conversation, there may be a few diff ways to translate a sentence so with these kind of patterns, I kinda figured how Japanese structure works.. Also, theres a lot of words that always repeat itself in Arashi's songs

Ah, gomen ne, after that long essay I don't think I really answered your qn.. m(_ _)m

Good luck with learning Japanese! I hope you find it as fun as I do ^-^
If you have any qns, don't hesitate to ask ne =)

Woah, only 2 years & no formal training & you can translate a song! I think it's amazing, haha.
I'm having trouble already just learning the different forms a verb can take and all that grammer bits. 8'D Sentence structures really give me a headache sometimes, sadly. ):
Thank you for the MS word idea though, I'm defn. going to try it to help me organise my thoughts better when I do try to translate songs, hehe.

Thanks for answering my question and everything!! :D Japanese is hard to learn, but since the interest is there for both of us, I think we'll master it in the long run right? :B
